Data cabling and Ethernet
Wired points where you need them
Your home may already have useful Ethernet outlets. We find them, test them and connect them.
For a desk, television or fixed device, a cable may provide a steadier connection.
If existing outlets aren't suitable, we can quote new Cat6 cabling.
Make existing outlets work
Activating a home data point means identifying, testing and connecting it to your network.
It does not activate an NBN internet service.
- Identify which wall outlet connects to which location in the cabinet.
- Test the cabling and report any faults found.
- Patch suitable links to your router or Ethernet switch.
- Label the working connections for future use.
Install new Cat6 outlets
We can quote a new data point for a home office, TV area or Wi-Fi access point.
The cable route and access determine the job: single-storey cavities differ from double-brick or concrete.
Work includes suitable cable, termination and connection testing, with the agreed location confirmed first.
When a registered cabler is needed
Fixed communications cabling in walls, ceilings and floors requires a registered cabler in Australia.
Plugging a ready-made patch lead into an existing outlet is different; you can do that yourself.
Registered customer-cabling work does not authorise alterations to NBN-owned network equipment.
Wired or Wi-Fi?
Fixed devices can benefit from a wired connection. Phones and moving devices still need Wi-Fi.
A home often works best with both. New outlets aren't always necessary; we check first.
What will it cost?
From $180
Starting price per new point where the cable route and access are suitable. Additional works are confirmed before installation.
The $150 health check is credited towards repair or upgrade work completed during the same visit. If no work goes ahead, the $150 visit fee applies.
We confirm the price, extra travel and any additional work before booking.
Questions about this service
- How can I tell whether I have data points?
- Look for RJ45 network outlets in rooms or near a communications cabinet. They resemble wider phone sockets.
- Can you use the outlets the builder installed?
- Yes, if they test as suitable for the network. We identify and patch them.
- Why don't my existing outlets work?
- They may not be connected at the cabinet, or a cable or termination may need repair.
- How much does a new data point cost?
- New Cat6 points have a starting price shown above. We confirm the cable route and full price before work.
- Does adding a point require a registered cabler?
- Fixed customer cabling and terminations require registration. Plugging in a ready-made patch lead does not.
- Is a cable better than Wi-Fi?
- A cable is often more consistent for fixed equipment. Wi-Fi suits mobile devices. Most homes use both.
