Starlink, 5G or satellite TV for the caravan? What each one does
Short answer: 5G works near mobile towers. Satellite TV brings in TV channels, not internet. Starlink gives you internet wherever the dish can see open sky, and that one connection covers work, calls and streaming.

Knockdown rebuild? Plan Starlink into the new home
Short answer: Starlink doesn't need a lead-in. If your builder makes the new home VinReady, you skip the lead-in reinstatement work for the internet, and you can activate Starlink on the day you move in.

Starlink on a Colorbond roof: how the tripod mount works
Short answer: on Colorbond and other metal roofs, we fit a tripod. It's tied down using the roof screws that are already there, so the mount doesn't add any new holes.

Keep Starlink running through a power failure with a UPS
Short answer: plug the Starlink power supply, and anything else you need online, into a UPS. When the power drops, the UPS keeps them running for a while. How long depends on the UPS and your kit, and we help you size it.

Starlink wall mount: when the fascia beats the roof
Short answer: some homes suit a wall mount better than a roof mount. We fit it under the fascia or gutter, or on a wall, as long as the dish still has open sky from there. We always check the fascia first.

Starlink
- Choosing a Starlink mountUnder-tile mount, tripod and fascia, chosen for your building.
- Where the router should goPut it in an open room, not a closed metal cupboard.
- Starlink in a power outageWhat a small battery backup can keep running.
- What a standard install includesVisible cable, one entry point, router on that wall.
- Equipment and deliveryWhat to do when the box arrives, and before we visit.
- Trees and obstructionsThe dish needs open sky, not a tidy spot under a tree.
- New homesLeave a cable path before the plaster goes on.
- VinReady for buildersStarlink-ready homes, prepared during the build.
- Farms and acreageThe dish is the start. The shed still needs its own connection.
- House or shed?Where the dish should sit so the cable run makes sense.
- External or concealed cableA secured outdoor cable, or a hidden run if you ask for it.
- Fixed wireless or StarlinkWhen a rural connection is dropping out and what to compare.
Wi-Fi and property networks
- Wi-Fi into a shedHouse Wi-Fi usually stops at a metal shed wall.
- Mesh or a wireless bridge?Mesh covers one building. A bridge joins two.
- Starlink mesh and Wi-Fi extendersFor homes and small acreage, we like Starlink's own mesh routers.
- Point-to-point wirelessA wireless link instead of digging a trench.
- Planning a property networkMark the buildings before you buy any hardware.

Field notes
- What a standard Starlink install coversWhat a standard Starlink install covers, and what costs extra.
- Somerville: a tripod instead of a tile holeA completed Starlink job on the Peninsula. We used an Astrogear tripod so the roof didn't need drilling.
- Cranbourne Cricket Club: off 4G, into the existing rackA completed clubrooms job. Starlink and Ubiquiti Wi-Fi replaced Telstra 4G. FrogBox kept streaming. We worked with the rack that was already there.
- Nyora new home: connected without a roof holeNewly occupied, cameras already on the walls, and a Starlink mount that did not put a hole through a new roof. Completed job in South Gippsland.
- Pearcedale: the five-acre job was a networkCompleted work on a five-acre property. Starlink at the house, then Wi-Fi that actually reached the shed and workshop.
- House Wi-Fi won't reach the shedBrick, Colorbond, water tanks and a driveway that leaves the shed well away from the house. Turning the lounge Wi-Fi up does not reach the shed. That is what most rural quotes come down to.
- Colorbond vs tile: how we actually mountTile and Colorbond roofs need different mounts. Here's what we use on each.
- The night before a Circl-allocated installGetting ready for install day: what to do with your Starlink box.
- Where the cable comes inA dish on the roof can look fine from the street. Leaks and overheating usually start at the hole in the wall, the cable strain, and a router shut in a cupboard.
- Pakenham factory: rooftop Starlink, then the cable, then commissioningA completed commercial rooftop. Mount, cable run, commission. Not a house job with a longer ladder.
