Colorbond vs tile: how we actually mount

Tile and Colorbond roofs need different mounts. Here's what we use on each.

DIY versus installed

Common DIY problems, and what we do instead

Typical DIY pain

  • A hole drilled through the tile
  • Router in a closed cabinet that cooks in summer
  • Cable flapping on Colorbond
  • Tripod sitting on tiles with no ballast plan

What we actually do

  • The right mount for the roof: under-tile mount on tile, tripod on Colorbond
  • One neat cable entry and a tidy cable route
  • Router on the backing wall, near power
  • A walk-through so you know how to switch it off safely

Tile

On tile roofs we use an under-tile mount. Its bracket fixes to the side of a roof truss and the tile slides back down over it, so no tiles are drilled.

Colorbond

On Colorbond we use a tripod tied down to the existing roof screws, so there are no new holes. The cable is secured so it can't flap. If it can't run along the roof sheet, we bring it through the roof with a Decktite.

Completed examples

Botanic Ridge: a fascia mount on a double-storey home, running off the owner's UPS. Bittern: a roof mount that replaced copper NBN. Safety Beach: a tripod on a flat roof with concealed gutters.
