House Wi-Fi won't reach the shed

Brick, Colorbond, water tanks and a driveway that leaves the shed well away from the house. Turning the lounge Wi-Fi up does not reach the shed. That is what most rural quotes come down to.

Internet comes into one building. From there: the router cabinet, house Wi-Fi, a wireless link to other buildings, and cameras.

How the internet gets around the property

  1. 01InternetStarlink or NBN arriving at one building.
  2. 02Cabinet / routerA labelled, ventilated spot for the router and gear.
  3. 03House Wi-FiRooms, verandah and the office you actually use.
  4. 04Building linksA wireless link to the shed, stable or gate hut.
  5. 05CamerasOn the same network, recording at the property.

Two different radios

House Wi-Fi is for people in rooms. A point-to-point link is for a building you can see. Mixing them is how you get a camera that works until it rains and a tack-room laptop that never quite joins.

Closer top-down plan of a rural property with paddock fences and gates and a driveway from the road gate to the house. The rectangular Starlink Standard dish sits on a tripod on the Colorbond house roof, and the router gives Wi-Fi inside the house. One dotted bridge link joins a radio on the house eave to a radio on the shed eave; the two radios face each other across a clear path with no trees in the way. A Wi-Fi access point inside the shed gives coverage there.
Example layout: one link from the house to the shed.

What we ask for

A photo from each end, a sketch in the property planner, and what the far building is used for. Four cameras need more than email in a lunchroom. The two buildings must be able to see each other, so we check nothing, like a hay shed, will be built in the way.
