What a UPS does
A UPS is a battery backup box. It plugs into a power point, and your gear plugs into it. When the mains power drops, it switches to its own battery, so your gear keeps going.
It's for the network, not the house. A UPS sized for your internet gear won't run the fridge, a pump or the air conditioner.
What needs to be on it
The internet only stays up if everything in the chain stays powered. The dish and the router both need power. If either one drops, the internet drops. On a typical setup, the UPS covers:
- The Starlink power supply and router. This is the core. Without it, nothing else matters.
- Your Wi-Fi gear. Mesh units, access points or a network switch, if you have them.
- The camera recorder, if you want it recording during the outage. A recorder only keeps recording if it's on the same backup, or has its own.
Keep the Starlink parts as they come
Starlink only guarantees performance with the power supply and cable that come in the box. So we don't swap them out or cut them down. The Starlink power supply simply plugs into the UPS instead of the wall.
How long will it run?
It depends on the UPS and the kit, and on what else you plug in. A bigger battery runs longer. More gear on it runs shorter. We don't quote a runtime, because every setup is different.
What we do is look at what you want online during a blackout, and help you size a UPS to suit. If you already have a generator or a solar battery, the network can run off that circuit instead. Any wiring into the switchboard is a job for a licensed electrician.
Where the UPS should go
Beside the Starlink power supply and the router, close to a power point, with air around it. A tidy, ventilated cabinet is a good home for it. See our network cabinets.
If backup power matters to you, tell us when you book. The cable route and the router spot need to land where the UPS will be.
Why it matters out here
Storms roll through the Mornington Peninsula and South Gippsland, and the power can go with them. On a lot of rural blocks, Starlink is the main connection for the house. A UPS keeps messages, Wi-Fi calling and cameras going while you wait for the power to come back.

Questions
Will a UPS keep my whole house running? No. It's sized for the network gear: the Starlink power supply, the router and anything else you need online. A house, a pump or the air conditioner is a different job.
How long will a UPS keep Starlink on? That depends on the UPS, your Starlink kit and what else is plugged in. Tell us what you need online and we'll help you size it.
Do you sell UPS units? We don't have a set UPS price. Ask us, and we'll help you work out what suits your setup and where it should sit.
Do I need an electrician? Not for a plug-in UPS beside the router. Anything wired into the switchboard, like a generator or solar battery circuit, is done by a licensed electrician.
