Starlink wall mount: when the fascia beats the roof

Short answer: some homes suit a wall mount better than a roof mount. We fit it under the fascia or gutter, or on a wall, as long as the dish still has open sky from there. We always check the fascia first.

When a wall mount makes sense

  • The clearest sky is at the edge of the house, not out on the roof.
  • You'd rather nothing went on the roof itself.
  • You're renting, or there are body corporate rules. Tell us when you enquire, so we can plan the right mount. Check with your landlord or body corporate too.

Sky still comes first. A tidy bracket on a wall that can't see the sky is a bad spot, however neat it looks.

We check the fascia first

The fascia is the board along the edge of the roof, where the gutter hangs. Before we fix anything to it, we check its condition.

  • Timber fascia: we use coach bolts, sometimes with a spacer.
  • Colorbond fascia: we fit a backing plate, usually timber or metal.

If the fascia isn't up to it, we'll tell you, and suggest another spot or one of our other mounts.

Two jobs like this

Both are in our patch, Lyndhurst just up the road from our Cranbourne base and Somerville on the Peninsula.

Wall, tripod or under-tile mount?

We use three mounts, and pick the one that suits the building:

  • Under-tile mount for tile roofs. It sits under the tiles, so no tiles are drilled.
  • Tripod for Colorbond roofs, tied down using the existing roof screws.
  • Wall mount, under the fascia or gutter, or on a wall.

Double-storey homes

A wall mount on a second storey is a double-storey job. Tell us when you book. Here's more on double-storey and access.

Before we visit

Send us photos of the wall or eave you have in mind, the view of the sky from there, and the router room. Here's what to have ready.

Questions

Can you mount Starlink on a wall instead of the roof? Yes, when the dish still has open sky from there. We fit it under the fascia or gutter, or on a wall.

Is a wall mount OK for a rental? It can be. Tell us you're renting, or under body corporate rules, when you enquire so we can plan the right mount. Check with your landlord first.

Do you check the fascia? Always. Timber fascia gets coach bolts, sometimes with a spacer. Colorbond fascia gets a backing plate.
