Starlink on a Colorbond roof: how the tripod mount works

Short answer: on Colorbond and other metal roofs, we fit a tripod. It's tied down using the roof screws that are already there, so the mount doesn't add any new holes.
  • A rectangular Starlink dish on a tripod mount on a corrugated metal roof in Somerville, with houses and the street behind.

How it goes on

  • 1. We pick the spot with the clearest view of the sky. A neat spot under a tree is still a bad spot.
  • 2. The tripod sits on the roof sheet and is tied down using the existing roof screws.
  • 3. The Starlink Standard dish goes on top, clear of anything that blocks the sky.
  • 4. The cable is secured so it can't flap in the wind. If it can't run along the roof sheet, we bring it through the roof with a Decktite.
  • 5. We set up the router and test the connection before we leave.

Why a tripod on metal

  • No new holes for the mount. It's held down with the screws the roof already has.
  • It goes where the sky is. We can place it on the part of the roof with the best view, not just the nearest edge.
  • It suits flat roofs too. A flat metal roof with concealed gutters doesn't always take a fascia clip. A tripod can work there instead.

Jobs where we used one

Metal roofs turn up everywhere we work, from new estates around Cranbourne to farmhouses down the Mornington Peninsula and beyond.

Our three mounts

We use three mounts, and pick the one that suits the building:

  • Under-tile mount for tile roofs. It sits under the tiles, so no tiles are drilled.
  • Tripod for Colorbond and metal roofs, tied down using the existing roof screws.
  • Wall mount, under the fascia or gutter, or on a wall, when that's the better spot. We always check the fascia first.

Questions

Do you drill holes in a Colorbond roof? Not for the mount. The tripod is tied down using the existing roof screws. If the cable can't run along the roof sheet, we bring it through the roof with a Decktite.

Will a tripod work on a flat roof? It can. Our Safety Beach job was a tripod on a double-storey flat roof with concealed gutters. Send us photos and we'll confirm.

How much is a tripod mount? $170 on top of the install. Enter your address on Get my price for the install price.
